An American Hero

From the warfront with Jihadistan...

While The Patriot does not condone any policy that places women in combat roles, sometimes our support units get caught in the middle of urban assaults and are forced to fight. That was the case on 20 March when 23-year-old Sgt. Leigh Ann Hester's MP unit was ambushed while guarding a convoy south of Baghdad. Hester led her team in a counterattack of about 50 insurgents and used her M-4 to kill three attackers in order to protect other support soldiers who were pinned down under fire.
When the dust settled, 27 insurgents were dead, six wounded and one captured.
Thursday, Hester became the first woman since World War II to earn a Silver Star -- the nation's third-highest award for valor and bravery in combat. Her squad leader, Staff Sgt. Timothy Nein, also was awarded a Silver Star.
Thousands of women have served in support roles in Iraq; 36 have been killed and 285 wounded. Because of the nature of this conflict with Jihadistan, there is no defined warfront but only skirmish lines when confronted by Jihadis. Thus, support forces, like Iraqi civilians, are subject to attack.
