Iraqi Shia Reject Iran

Many handwringers over Iraq have fretted that Maiki is a puppet of Iran and that the majority Shia would capitulate to Iranian influence. Well I have got news for them, that ain't quite what is going on. Iraq is largely Arab even among Sunni and Shia sects, Iran is Persian and has a different form of Shia than the Arabs and is different culturally as well. Plus they fought a very bloody war not that many years ago and Saddam had promoted nationalism and Iraq's arabness that laid a crude patriotic foundation.
From Reuters via Gateway Pundit who has lots more.

More than 300,000 Iraqis including 600 Shi'ite tribal leaders have signed a petition accusing Iran of sowing "disorder" in southern Iraq, a group of sheikhs involved in the campaign said.

The sheikhs showed Reuters two thick bundles of notes which contained original signatures. The sheikhs said more than 300,000 people had signed the pages.

Such a public and organized display of animosity toward neighboring Shi'ite Iran is rare in Iraq. Iranian influence has grown steadily, especially in the predominantly Shi'ite south, since the U.S.-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.

"More than 300,000 people from the southern provinces condemned the interference of the Iranian regime in Iraq and especially in spreading security disorder in the provinces," the sheikhs said in a statement.

could it be that people like the small taste of freedom they have thusfar enjoyed and are looking for more? could it be that shi'ite or no, they want control of their own country and do not want to be beholden to persian iran? me thinks the latter at least as much as the former.

great post, goat!

Thanks Heidi, from what I am gathering the Iraqis are not only smelling freedom, they are tasting and feeling it as well. Iraq will be the jewel of the ME in the not to distant future.

I just posted a great response, but I lost it somewhere.......now I dont remember what I wrote....Age......It was fine until I did the letters below and it never comes out right so i go to redo it and I loose my comments....anyway I was saying This is the country of King Hamarrabi the man who established the first written law. I think there were somethng like 83 remedies to lawbreakers. also Ur it the birthplace of Abraham. This country is the base for Judeo-christian and Islam religions. I feel that the peoples lived here at peace with one another until or peoples started pitting brother against brother, sect against sect and tribe against tribe. Seperate and conquor has been the name of the game and now it is starting to unravel, hopefully, it will continue to heal...i ramble....stay well.......

No one wants to be ruled by another, even if they are the same sect. People want to rule themselves as much as they can. I don't want another Christian (picture Fred Phelps) telling me how to live every second of my life and I'm sure that a lot of Shi-ites who see Iran have similar feelings.

Here in Britainistan we're coming to the end of the lavishly petrodollar-funded ISLAM AWARENESS WEEK, with the 'Religion of Peace' message being proclaimed throughout our schools and colleges. Every British child now knows that 'Islam means Peace' and that Muslims cannot possibly have carried out the terrorist attacks for which they've been blamed, and they're bringing home the glossy booklets to prove it to their bigoted Islamophobic parents. Allah Akhbar!!!!

So as my own humble underfunded contribution to Islam Awareness Week, I've compiled a list of Islamically Aware blogs which allow unrestricted comments and are active as of 24-NOV-2007 . Let us go forth and share Islam Awareness throughout the blogosphere!!!
